Beginner’s BJJ Class

July 17th, 2012

Carlson Gracie Essex is pleased to announce that from Tuesday 17th July a new Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Beginners class will be added to the current timetable at SD Martial Arts, Colchester.

¬ē¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†Classes will be every Tuesday 18:30-19:30

The beginners programme will be focussed on teaching the fundamentals of Jiu-jitsu at a pace and intensity appropriate for the complete novice.

Classes will also be suitable for those currently training other martial arts who wish to learn the ground aspect of fighting.  These classes will also be an excellent introduction for those wishing to train a martial art for the first time and to prepare aspiring BJJ practitioners for more advanced training.

You can train BJJ to:

¬ē¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†Get in shape

¬ē¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†Reduce stress

¬ē¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†Have fun

¬ē¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†Acquire a new skill

¬ē¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†Learn to defend yourself

¬ďI am a 44 year old child protection social worker with 4 children and a grandchild. I have not done any exercise for 10 years. I began BJJ 3 months ago and I attend 2 private sessions a week with Alain Pozo as I am unable to get to the classes.

It was a little scary going to the gym as I imagined it being full of super fit people with big egos to match. Of course there are many very fit people; however I couldn’t have been more wrong as it turned out to be a friendly and welcoming place.

My fitness levels have increased so much and I am feeling more confident. I am eating healthily and I have lost a stone in weight and 3 inches off my waist, hips and thighs. I have a stressful job but when I leave my sessions I feel distressed and happy.

BJJ has changed my life and I have definitely got the BJJ bug, I would go every day if I could. I would recommend BJJ to anybody of any age, fitness level or background, just take the plunge, you won¬ít regret it. I would also recommend Alain as he is a fantastic trainer!¬Ē¬†¬†Tracey

¬†¬ď4.5 months ago I made one of the best decisions in my fitness life and that decision was to start Brazilian Jujitsu (BJJ). If someone would have told me that it would start to develop into a lifestyle I would have doubted them. However almost 5 months on it has become a big part of my life and helped me to focus on areas in life; like training hard, diet, conditioning, pushing myself and weight loss. During the time I have been training BJJ I have lost a total of 9 kilos!

¬†From day one head coach Alain Pozo makes you feel like one of the team, and its his passion for the BJJ lifestyle that translates through to his technical, coaching and conditioning knowledge. Unlike some martial arts I have trained in before there is little room for ego or attitude in classes, and the camaraderie between the students is what helps to push yourself when you feel you¬íve got nothing left in the tank, makes you want to eat well and live well. It¬ís not often you find environments in life where everyone around you wants to better their previous performance but at Carlson Gracie Essex it¬ís clear to see.¬Ē¬†David

Kerry Masarati wins at KAYO-MMA

September 5th, 2011

Saturday night saw Carlson Gracie Essex fighter Kerry Masarati win via unanimous decision in her highly entertaining two-round amateur bout at the KAYO-MMA event in Watford.

In front of a huge crowd Kerry showed her striking dominance in the cage, as well as scoring takedowns and managing to fend off any submission attempts by her opponent on the ground.

Kerry has worked hard with the team these past few months to improve her grappling in preparation for this fight, and has expressed thanks to everyone who helped contribute to this win.

We look forward to seeing more wins in the future. Oooossss Carlson Gracie!

Demetrius Ramos Seminar Report 10/07/2021

July 11th, 2011

On Sunday several members of Carlson Gracie Essex travelled up to Felixstowe to attend the farewell seminar hosted by Demetrius Ramos. Demetrius is returning to the USA and to his academy in Arizona - Tucson Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Also in attendance to instruct were Eduardo Gonçalves and Checkmat Blackbelt Claudio Silva - who had less than 24hrs before won the WFC Middleweight Title Belt. Demetrius will be handing his classes in Norwich over to Claudio and Edu will be taking over the BJJ instruction at Dynamo. The seminar gave the students an opportunity to meet their new instructors and sample the high level of BJJ instruction they will continue to receive. Our own Alain Pozo was on hand to aid the demonstrations and support the students.

For the most part the seminar focussed on half guard techniques, with Demetrius and Edu both showing positions and techniques from the bottom, demonstrating how to react to the opponent and transition to sweep or take the back. Edu explained that these were unapologetically Black Belt level techniques, but that he was keen to expose the students to this level of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

Claudio followed Edu and Dema’s techniques with a half -guard pass which had been highly popular at this year’s Mundials, as well as showing the setup for the kneebar he used to win the finals of the recent Submission 1000 event, with several calf-crush, leg and ankle lock variations to use from the same position.  Claudio’s instruction came with a huge amount of detail with application beyond the moves being shown.

Demetrius ended the seminar with several belt promotions and an emotive speech about his time in the UK, thanking his students and friends and outlining the bright future he sees for BJJ in the area with Alain, Edu and Claudio leading the way. Edu, Claudio and Alain also gave a few words to thank Dema, talk of the mutual respect that exists between them and outline some of their expectations.

Carlson Gracie Essex would like to wish Demetrius well for the future. He is a fantastic instructor with true BJJ spirit ¬Ė an example to us all. We hope some of our students will take the opportunity to visit and train with Demetrius at his academy in Arizona in the future.

All of the students at these clubs will always be very welcome to visit and train with us in Essex.
